Net-A-Porter Founder Accuses Ex-Partner of Financial Exploitation and Deception
The split between fashion industry power couple Natalie Massenet, founder of the luxury online retailer net-A-Porter, and advertising executive Erik Torstensson has taken a dramatic turn with a lawsuit alleging financial abuse, infidelity, and substance abuse. The story is gaining notable traction in international media outlets like The Times, The Telegraph, and the Daily Mail, which first reported on the filing in a California court on Wednesday.
Torstensson, a Swedish native who has resided abroad since the late 1990s, is a co-founder of the upscale denim brand Frame, known for its celebrity clientele including Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Kate Moss. His career trajectory shifted in 2009 when he partnered with Massenet, a former fashion journalist who revolutionized luxury retail with the launch of Net-A-Porter. The online department store propelled Massenet to billionaire status and a consistent place on the British Sunday Times Rich List.
Now, the relationship has reportedly ended acrimoniously, with Massenet detailing accusations in a 27-page court document. According to the lawsuit, torstensson allegedly exploited her financially, engaged in extramarital affairs, and struggled with drug use. Massenet claims to have discovered evidence – messages and photographs – demonstrating a “double life” spanning several years.
the filing alleges that Massenet invested over $95 million (approximately 845 million Swedish Krona) into the couple’s lifestyle during their relationship, covering expenses ranging from luxury real estate and travel to everyday living costs.
Massenet further contends that Torstensson used her wealth to cultivate relationships with celebrities, financing lavish expenses like private jet rentals and art acquisitions, and supporting an extravagant lifestyle. She alleges he initially “seduced” her with the intention of leveraging her social connections – including David and Victoria Beckham – to promote his businesses.
The lawsuit centers around a purported agreement where Massenet would cover all joint and professional expenses, with the understanding that she would share in the profits generated by Torstensson’s ventures. Massenet claims this agreement was never honored.
According to the court documents, “When the romantic relationship ended due to his deceitful behavior, and her financial support ceased, he severed Massenet from any potential revenue from her substantial investment in Torstensson over the past fifteen years.”
Massenet is now pursuing legal action against Torstensson for breach of contract, fraud, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Her legal team states she has experienced “severe emotional distress” and required therapy as an inevitable result of the alleged events.
Attempts to reach erik Torstensson for comment have been unsuccessful. According to the Daily Mail, he has yet to file a response to the court.
