Macron Pledges European Security guarantees for Ukraine, Awaiting U.S. Commitment
PARIS/BRUSSELS – European nations are poised to solidify their commitment to Ukraine’s long-term security, with a key meeting scheduled for Thursday in Paris aimed at outlining a concrete plan for security guarantees, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced Wednesday. Teh initiative, involving around thirty countries primarily from Europe – dubbed the “volunteer coalition” – is currently awaiting a clear signal of support from the United States.
“I expect to have tomorrow or shortly after, a clear idea of what we can do collectively” to guarantee the security of Ukraine, Rutte told reporters in Brussels. He emphasized the goal of deepening commitments, working in tandem with the U.S. to determine the extent of their participation.
French president Emmanuel macron, speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stated Europe is ready to ensure “robust peace, lasting for Ukraine and for Europeans.”
The Paris meeting, conducted both in person and via video conference, will serve as a exhibition of European willingness to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, particularly while the future of U.S. support remains uncertain.
The “volunteer coalition” is prepared to offer broad support to the Ukrainian army, potentially including the deployment of troops following a cease-fire to deter further Russian aggression. However, several European nations have expressed hesitation in making firm commitments without a clear understanding of U.S. involvement, which they consider essential.
Former U.S. president Donald Trump indicated on August 18th that the United States would stand with European allies in providing security guarantees for Ukraine, contingent upon a cease-fire or peace agreement. This potential “safety net” – or “backstop” - from the U.S. could encompass details sharing, logistical assistance, and communications support, though trump has ruled out deploying American troops to Ukraine.
