National Guard Soldier Dies After Washington D.C. Shooting; Suspect Faces Murder Charges

National Guard Soldier Dies From Injuries After D.C. Shooting

One National ⁣Guard soldier has died ​from injuries sustained in a shooting near the‌ White House on Wednesday,officials confirmed. A second service member remains in​ critical condition. The incident, described by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser as a “targeted attack,” occured‍ just ⁤blocks from the presidential residence.

The‌ two National Guard ​members were ambushed⁤ by a lone gunman who “came ​around the corner” ‌and opened fire, according​ to Metropolitan Police ⁢Department official Jeffery Carroll.‍ Other ⁤National Guard members intervened, ending ⁤the attack and taking the⁣ suspect into custody. The soldiers were part of ​an anti-crime federal task force-comprising troops and federal law enforcement-deployed to‍ the capital city​ during the Trump​ administration.

The ⁢shooting prompted a strong​ response from Judge Jeanine Pirro, who, at a thursday press conference, dismissed criticism of the National Guard’s deployment. “I ‌don’t even wanna talk about whether thay should have been there,” Pirro stated. “We‍ ought ​to kiss​ the ground and thank god ⁢that the president said, its time to bring in more law enforcement to make ⁣sure that a city‌ that had ⁣the 4th highest ‌homicide rate in the country, that that violence was quelled.”

According to a February report from the Rochester Institute of Technology,D.C.’s homicide rate ⁢in 2024 was 27.3 per 100,000 people, a significant decrease from ⁣2023.
