Nathan Cofnas Suspended by Ghent University Over Jason Arday Plagiarism Allegations
Suspension Over Arday Scrutiny
Nathan Cofnas has been suspended by Ghent University.
The academic, who ignited public scrutiny regarding the credentials of former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday, confirmed his suspension in a post on X on Thursday. According to RTÉ News, he stated that he was under investigation for discriminating against Professor Arday.
Disciplinary Action and University Stance
Ghent University rector Petra De Sutter and vice-rector Herwig Reynaert addressed the matter in a joint announcement.
The institution stands for human dignity and opposes discrimination, hatred, and racism. While the university emphasizes its support for academic freedom and open debate, that freedom is not unlimited and goes hand in hand with responsibility, according to the university’s leadership. The institution formally notified Mr Cofnas of a preliminary disciplinary investigation to assess whether grounds exist to refer the matter to a disciplinary body, placing him on precautionary suspension in the interim.
Resignation Follows Intense Scrutiny
Professor Arday resigned from his post at Cambridge this month.
According to BBC News, he stated that the personal cost of the scrutiny had become too great. His appointment in 2023 as Cambridge’s youngest ever black professor had been celebrated as a progressive moment in an academic sector where only one per cent of professors in UK universities are black. Following intense public commentary and allegations concerning his thesis and publications initially raised by Mr Cofnas, Professor Arday stepped down. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his PhD in 2015, previously concluded that he had not plagiarised his work, and Cambridge subsequently announced an independent investigation into his appointment.
Vigil Draws Thousands in London
Professor Arday was found dead in Battersea, south London, last Friday.

Organisers reported that more than 30,000 people attended a vigil for him in Trafalgar Square earlier this week, where speakers criticized the press coverage surrounding his resignation. Ghent University officials confirmed that the institution was shocked by his death, noting that the event should prompt reflection as disciplinary proceedings concerning Mr Cofnas continue.
