Supreme Court Temporarily Allows Trump White House Ballroom Construction to Continue

August 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Supreme Court Intervention Keeps Ballroom Work Alive

US Chief Justice John Roberts issued a temporary administrative stay allowing construction on the $400 million White House ballroom project to continue. The order halts an appeals court decision that would have stopped the work next week, according to court documents and reporting by Bloomberg.com and NBC News.

John Sauer. It followed an appeals court ruling last week that ordered work to stop until Congress approved the project, as reported by the BBC.

Historic Preservation Lawsuit Sparks Legal Battle

The stop-work order stemmed from a lawsuit brought by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The organization argued that the administration violated federal law by demolishing the East Wing in October without a legally required public review and approval process involving entities such as the National Capital Planning Commission.

Progress Nears Two-Thirds Completion Mark

According to filings from the solicitor general’s office, work on the ballroom is currently 65% complete.

Sauer told the Supreme Court that halting the project via injunction would be dangerous and inequitable. He asserted in court documents that the stop-work mandate is “even more flagrantly inequitable, if not impossible” given the progress made on the site.

Private Funding and National Security Claims

The administration has maintained that the project requires no congressional permission or taxpayer funds. It argues that the build is financed entirely through private corporate donations.

Government lawyers also noted in filings that the construction encompasses national security infrastructure, including bomb shelters and medical treatment centers, according to the BBC.

Deadline Set for Plaintiffs’ Response

In response to the administration’s emergency application, Chief Justice Roberts ordered the National Trust for Historic Preservation to file its formal response by Tuesday noon.
