Natalie Portman Hails Israel-Gaza Hostage Deal as ‘Momentous’ at Red Sea Film Festival
Red Sea Film Festival, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Actress Natalie Portman described a deal securing the release of hostages held by Hamas as “momentous” during her appearance at the Red Sea Film Festival on Friday, according to reports. The agreement, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, will see the release of 50 hostages – women and children – held in Gaza in exchange for the release of 150 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Portman, a staunch advocate for Israel, expressed her relief and hope following the declaration, stating the deal offered a crucial step toward easing suffering for families on both sides of the conflict. The actress has previously voiced her horror at the October 7th attacks by Hamas and publicly supported Israel’s right to defend itself.This latest development arrives amid ongoing fighting and a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza,raising hopes for a more sustained de-escalation.
The actress was at the festival promoting her new animated film, “Arco,” which she produced with Sophie Mas. Portman recently emphasized her desire to focus on projects that bring ”positivity” to the world, particularly in light of current events. She also premiered and produced the upcoming comedies “The Galerist” and “Good Sex.”
“Children, women and the elderly have been murdered and abducted from their own homes,” Portman wrote in a previous statement following the initial attacks. “I am in horror at the barbaric acts and my heart is pounding with love and prayer for the families of all affected.”
