Opposition Lawmaker Criticizes Lee jae-myung’s UN Ambassador Appointment
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Representative Na Kyung-won sharply criticized the appointment of a lawyer with no diplomatic experience as South Korea’s next United Nations ambassador, alleging the decision prioritizes personal loyalty over national interests. Na accused Lee Jae-myung of selecting a “personal Bo-eun” for the crucial UN Security Council post, marking the first time as 1990 a non-diplomat has been nominated for the role.
The appointment has ignited debate over the qualifications required for such a sensitive position, particularly given the complexities of international negotiations and the need for experienced representation on the global stage. The UN Ambassador serves as a key figure in articulating South Korea’s position on critical issues, engaging with international counterparts – including North korean ambassadors – and safeguarding national interests. Na contends that the role demands a seasoned diplomat capable of navigating high-stakes discussions.
Na further stated the UN Ambassador position is traditionally a ministerial-level courtesy post, questioning whether the nominee possesses the necessary skills to effectively represent South Korea at the United Nations. ”Is this person… able to deal with heavy duties to shoot national interests at the international negotiation table?” she asked.
the lawmaker argued that the UN ambassadorship should not be treated as “loot” for a private lawyer and called for an immediate withdrawal of the nomination. She warned that continuing with the appointment risks turning Korean diplomacy into a source of international ridicule. Na also raised concerns about a pattern of appointing individuals connected to Lee Jae-myung to key government positions without adequate vetting or demonstrable qualifications, suggesting a broader issue of prioritizing loyalty over competence within the administration.
