MTV Video music Awards See Six-Year Viewership Peak on CBS
NEW YORK – The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards achieved its highest viewership in six years,drawing over 5.5 million viewers after a broadcast shift to CBS, nielsen Live+SD Fast National Data revealed Tuesday. the awards show, simulcast on MTV and streamed on Paramount+, saw a 42% increase in audience compared to last year’s event, which reached over 4 million viewers across 13 networks.
The move to CBS proved a significant boost for the VMAs, hosted by LL Cool J and featuring performances by Doja Cat, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, and Sabrina carpenter. The show’s success marks the highest ratings since 2019 and secured the No. 1 entertainment program spot of the night, surpassing NBC’s Sunday Night Football game between the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills.
Beyond television ratings, the VMAs experienced substantial growth in digital engagement. The event boasted the best voting turnout in its history, with 2.5 billion global votes - a 121% increase year-over-year. social media video views exceeded one billion globally,up 21% from the previous year,and the show trended No. 1 on X (formerly Twitter) both nationally and globally.
On Paramount+, the VMAs ranked as the third-largest live-streamed entertainment program, trailing only the Grammy Awards and golden Globe awards. The broadcast also featured a performance by Sabrina Carpenter, who paid tribute to Britney Spears and advocated for trans rights with a performance featuring contestants from RuPaul’s drag Race.
