MPs Engage Residents Through Community Fitness Runs

April 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Members of parliament from Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) joined residents for a community run in Tampines on Saturday morning, marking the latest in a series of regular fitness events aimed at strengthening grassroots engagement. The run, which began at 7 a.m. From Tampines Central Park, saw approximately 120 participants, including MPs Desmond Choo, Cheng Li Hui, and Koh Poh Koon, alongside local residents ranging from teenagers to seniors. Organized by the Tampines GRC Citizens’ Consultative Committee, the 3-kilometre route wound through residential estates and past neighbourhood landmarks, concluding with a light breakfast and informal dialogue at the community club.

The initiative, launched in early 2023, has seen monthly runs held across different wards within Tampines GRC, with participation steadily growing from an initial turnout of around 40 people. According to committee secretary Tan Mei Ling, the runs were conceived as a low-barrier way for elected officials to interact with constituents outside formal settings such as Meet-the-People Sessions or constituency offices. “It’s not about politics,” she said. “It’s about showing up, sweating together, and listening when people are relaxed and open.”

During the post-run gathering, residents raised concerns about rising transport costs, the availability of eldercare services in the eastern region, and delays in upgrading playground facilities in Block 456. MPs noted the feedback for follow-up with relevant agencies, though no immediate commitments were made. Choo, who chairs the Tampines GRC Town Council, acknowledged the playground issue and said a site assessment had been requested, with results expected within four weeks.

The runs are part of a broader trend among PAP MPs to adopt more visible, participatory forms of engagement, particularly in the lead-up to the next general election, which must be held by November 2025. Similar initiatives have been observed in other GRCs, including Jalan Besar and East Coast, where MPs have participated in community clean-ups, food distribution drives, and virtual town halls. However, unlike those events, the Tampines runs emphasize physical activity as a shared experience rather than a platform for announcements or policy briefings.

No opposition MPs were present at the run, and the Workers’ Party, which contests in nearby Tampines West SMC, did not respond to requests for comment on whether they have comparable engagement programmes. The PAP has not released official statistics on attendance trends across its various grassroots fitness activities, though internal reviews cited in a 2024 party newsletter noted that such events correlate with higher satisfaction scores in post-engagement surveys.

The next Tampines GRC community run is scheduled for April 27, rotating to the Simei ward. Organizers confirmed the route and timing remain unchanged, with registration open via the constituency’s mobile app and no fee required for participation. As of Saturday, over 80 residents had already signed up for the April event. No further details about the agenda or potential guest speakers were disclosed.
