Morocco Among MCC Candidates for 2026 Financial Assistance

Morocco among 87 Countries Considered for US Millennium Challenge Account Funding in 2026

Morocco has been identified as a potential recipient of financial aid from the United States’ Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) ⁤for the 2026 fiscal year. The MCC, an independent US government agency, released a report Tuesday outlining 87 countries currently under consideration for assistance.

Eligibility for the program hinges on ‌two primary factors: a nation’s per‌ capita income and its adherence to US legal requirements. To qualify, a country’s income must remain below a threshold of $7,855 – the level triggering the graduation process‍ from the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Growth (BIRD). Furthermore, countries ‍must not‍ be subject to any restrictions preventing them from receiving US economic assistance as outlined in the Foreign Assistance act or ⁢other relevant legislation.

The MCC emphasizes that these “candidate”‍ nations demonstrate a commitment to‌ good governance, economic liberty, and investments in their citizens’ well-being.The agency seeks to partner with countries showing ⁣strong potential‌ for poverty reduction and sustainable economic⁢ growth.

However, the ⁤report cautions that⁤ eligibility is not guaranteed. The MCC notes that candidate countries, including Morocco, coudl face future legal hurdles ‌or internal changes that impact their qualification for funding in 2026.

Notably, seventeen‌ countries ‍that met the income criteria were excluded from consideration due to existing US ‌legal prohibitions on aid. These exclusions stem from a variety of issues, including recent military coups, unresolved debt obligations,⁢ and ongoing conflicts, ‍as ‌seen in the cases of Azerbaijan, burkina Faso, Ghana, Nicaragua, and Zimbabwe.

This report marks the initial phase of a three-stage selection process. The MCC will ultimately negotiate assistance agreements – known as “compacts” – ‍with a final selection of countries, ‌outlining specific ⁢projects and funding allocations.
