Luis Ortiz, a pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians, entered a not-guilty plea Wednesday in connection with allegations that he and teammate Emmanuel Clase accepted bribes to influence game outcomes. Ortiz, 26, appeared in Brooklyn federal court after being arrested Sunday at Boston Logan International Airport. He was released on $500,000 bail and will be monitored via GPS pending a Nov. 19 court date. As conditions of his release, Ortiz surrendered his passport and is restricted to travel within New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio. He is also prohibited from gambling, possessing weapons or illegal drugs, and contacting those involved in the case. Ortiz reportedly answered questions from the judge briefly and declined to comment to the media. Clase, a former Guardians reliever, is scheduled to appear in the same court Thursday. The charges allege the players accepted payments to impact pitches in favor of sports bettors.
