Police Investigate as Foul Play Suspected in Death of Eight-Year-Old Fabian
Güstrow, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - Authorities are investigating the death of eight-year-old Fabian, whose body was discovered Tuesday in a forest near Klein Upahl, south of Güstrow. While forensic examination is pending, police spokesman Florian Müller confirmed they believe the body is that of the missing child.
The area surrounding the finding site has been cordoned off as criminal examination measures are underway. Police are currently working to determine how Fabian came to be at the location.
“According to the current status of the investigation, it can be assumed that there was foul play,” stated a joint release from the police and public prosecutor’s office.
Fabian was reported missing by his mother last Friday evening after failing to return home at the agreed-upon time. A large-scale search involving numerous emergency services was launched in and around Güstrow. On Monday alone, approximately 200 personnel were deployed in the search effort.
The search intensified Monday evening when several cadaver dogs independently indicated a location at an island lake on the outskirts of Güstrow. Divers searched the shoreline Tuesday without success, while other teams continued to scour forests and abandoned buildings in the Güstrow area.
The body was ultimately located following a tip from a citizen who contacted police later Tuesday morning. The investigation remains ongoing.
