Veteran baseball writer Juan Vené, a member of the Baseball writers Association of America (BBWAA), has stated he will not vote for Miguel Cabrera for the Hall of Fame, citing concerns about his defensive capabilities and a past domestic violence incident.
Vené, speaking in an interview, elaborated on his decision, emphasizing that Hall of Fame induction should recognize a “complete player quality.” He pointed out that while Cabrera’s offensive prowess was undeniable, his defensive contributions were not at a Hall of Fame level.

Originally signed as a shortstop by the Florida Marlins in 1999,Miguel Cabrera played various positions throughout his career, including third base, first base, and outfield. However, Vené suggested that Cabrera struggled defensively.
“Miguel was not good in any defensive position; they did not find where to put him,” Vené stated. “he ended up being a designated hitter.”
Domestic Violence Allegations
Vené also cited a past domestic violence incident involving the Venezuelan player as a reason for his vote. He drew a parallel, suggesting that if one player is censured for such an issue, Cabrera should be treated similarly.
“Miguel also had domestic violence,” Vené said.”I return to the same point: if it’s the same for one, it’s the same for another. If we censor one for that, we will also censor Miguel.”
Support Within the Writers’ Association
The BBWAA members are responsible for electing players to the Hall of Fame. Vené indicated that many of his colleagues share his reservations about Cabrera’s candidacy.
“I have nothing against Miguel, or anyone,” Vené reiterated. “But if I am going to be a judge, I have to be very impartial. I have discussed this with several colleagues from the association. Most agree with me,though not all, that they will not vote for Miguel.”
Despite his personal stance, the 96-year-old journalist acknowledged that Cabrera is likely to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
