Middle East Conflict: Iran Faces Calls for Concessions as Tensions Rise

March 20, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Iranian military launched a “novel wave of missiles” targeting central Israel on Wednesday, according to Iranian state media, as the conflict with Israel entered its 21st day. The attacks came as Israel continued strikes deep inside Iran, including in Tehran, and as global oil prices surged amid fears of a prolonged crisis and potential shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. Is accelerating the deployment of over 2,000 Marines and sailors to the Middle East, according to two individuals with knowledge of the decision. The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit is expected to deploy from San Diego in the coming days, adding to the growing American military presence in the region.

Israel has reportedly killed several high-ranking Iranian officials in recent days, including Ali Larijani, Iran’s security chief, and Gholamreza Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Basij paramilitary force. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the military will “continue hunting” Iran’s leadership, suggesting a divergence in war aims between Israel and the United States.

The attacks on energy sites across the Gulf, including in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE, have sent global oil prices sharply higher. Iran issued a warning that enemy officials and soldiers were not safe, even while on vacation in tourist destinations.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized NATO as a “paper tiger” for refusing to participate in a mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports. Meanwhile, a senior U.S. Intelligence official resigned, citing misgivings about the administration’s handling of the conflict with Iran.

France and Germany have reportedly reached an agreement on the need for “major concessions” from Iran to bring an end to the conflict, while France has also directly called on Tehran to make such concessions. Yet, the specifics of those concessions remain undisclosed.

As of Wednesday, more than 2,000 people have been killed across the Middle East, with over 1,200 deaths in Iran, at least 1,000 in Lebanon, and 13 in Israel. Thirteen U.S. Service members have also been killed, with two additional deaths attributed to non-combat causes.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society has reported the death toll within Iran, while the situation in Lebanon remains volatile. The U.S. State Department confirmed that 913 Indian citizens have left Iran.
