Power Bank Fire Causes Mid-Air panic on Flight ⁣from Hangzhou to Seoul

A flight ⁢from⁢ Hangzhou to Seoul experienced‌ a frightening incident when a power bank ignited mid-air, filling the⁤ cabin with smoke and ⁤triggering panic amongst passengers. The fire occurred on an ⁢Airbus A321 at an ⁣altitude of 10⁢ kilometers,‌ originating in an overhead luggage compartment.

Cabin crew responded quickly and effectively, extinguishing the flames with fire extinguishers. The pilots immediately contacted air‍ traffic ⁤control, preparing for an emergency landing at Shanghai Pudong Airport. Fortunately, ⁢the crew successfully contained the situation, allowing the plane to land‍ safely. ⁢No ⁤injuries to passengers or crew ‍were reported.

Video footage of the incident, circulating widely on social media, shows flames⁢ erupting⁢ from the⁤ overhead compartment as passengers‍ react with ⁣alarm and crew members ⁤work to control the fire.

This incident highlights‍ the growing safety concerns surrounding portable ‌electronic devices, especially power banks, which utilize lithium-ion ‌or lithium-polymer ‍batteries. These batteries⁢ can become fire hazards⁢ if damaged, overheated, ‌or improperly handled. Current aviation regulations require passengers to carry power ⁢banks in cabin luggage for easy access in case ⁣of emergency.

In response to a rise in battery-related incidents, Emirates recently announced a ban on using or charging power banks on board⁢ their flights, effective October 1st. Passengers are still permitted ‍to carry one power bank in their cabin baggage, but it ‍is indeed prohibited in checked luggage.

according to ⁣emirates, “The use ⁣of power banks has grown considerably in‌ recent years,‌ leading to more‍ battery-related incidents in aviation. This measure⁤ aims to reduce such risks.”
