Dr. Pérez Tanoira: Strengthening global Health Through Microbiology
For over a decade, Dr. Pérez Tanoira has dedicated his career to international cooperation, focusing on establishing and enhancing clinical microbiology laboratories in underserved rural communities across Africa and Latin America.His work centers on combating infectious diseases prevalent in these regions, including tuberculosis, malaria, gastrointestinal illnesses, and antimicrobial resistance.
Dr. Pérez Tanoira’s efforts are crucial as improved laboratory diagnostics lead to more accurate and timely identification of illnesses.This allows for more effective treatment,reducing child morbidity and mortality and ultimately improving life expectancy.
Beyond initial implementation, Dr.Pérez Tanoira prioritizes the long-term sustainability of these projects. He achieves this through comprehensive training of local personnel, fostering institutional partnerships between health and academic organizations, and addressing critical infrastructure needs like access to clean water and electricity.His impactful projects include the development of microbiology laboratories at Notre dame de la Santé Hospital (Cameroon), the General Hospital of Gambo (ethiopia), and Saint Joseph Hospital in Kitgum (Uganda). He has also contributed to establishing an assistance laboratory for a mobile clinic in Jean Rabel (Haiti) and in Turkana, Kenya.
A highly qualified professional with doctorates from both the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Helsinki, Dr.Pérez Tanoira has also spearheaded research into antimicrobial resistance in low-income settings.
Currently, he serves as a coordinator for the Master of Tropical Medicine and International Health at the Autonomous University of Madrid. This program aims to cultivate a new generation of specialized professionals, offering opportunities for practical experience through collaborations and placements in hospitals like those in Gambo (Ethiopia), rugucherry (India), and Iquitos (Peru).
