Michael Carrick Apologises After Manchester United Defeat
Carrick Faces Away Section After Heavy European Defeat
Manchester United coach Michael Carrick apologised to travelling supporters after his side suffered a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como, marking the club’s fifth loss in all competitions this season.
Heading into the busy autumn European calendar, the heavy loss in Italy extends United’s winless run to seven matches. Carrick walked over to the away section at the final whistle, repeatedly holding up his hands to acknowledge the scoreline before addressing the media about the performance.
Como Dominates Opening Phase Fixture in Italy
Como secured the victory through goals from Nico Paz, who scored twice, alongside strikes from Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon. Joshua Zirkzee netted a late consolation for the visitors, but the match remained entirely lopsided throughout the opening phase fixture.
“It was nowhere near good enough in so many ways. We didn’t deserve to get anything from the game,” Carrick told 1News.
Manager Takes Full Blame Amid Mounting Pressure
The defeat compounds a troubled domestic and European stretch for United. After rescuing the previous campaign following a January appointment that secured a third-place league finish and Champions League qualification, Carrick now faces mounting pressure. United has won just once in league play this term and already exited the English League Cup in the earliest round.

“It was more than disappointing. I think everybody has got to take responsibility for that,” Carrick said. “I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and the performance — that’s where it stops. It stops with me and I’m absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally. But as a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say.”
Addressing the Heartbeat of the Club
“They are the heartbeat of this football club and they always will be. For them to travel, I had to apologise for the performance. To have to watch a performance like that, I totally feel for them.”
