Mexico City – The death toll from last Wednesday’s pipeline explosion on the Concordia bridge in Iztapalapa has risen to 19, including Fernando Soto Munguía, the 34-year-old driver of the tanker truck involved in the incident, the Mexico City Ministry of Health confirmed today. Soto Munguía had been hospitalized at the Victorian Traumatology Hospital.
The escalating tragedy underscores the dangers of fuel theft and aging infrastructure in Mexico, and raises questions about safety protocols for transporting hazardous materials. the incident has left dozens injured and a community reeling, with ongoing medical care and investigations into the cause of the explosion continuing.
Currently,32 individuals remain hospitalized as a result of the blast,while 33 have been discharged. Hospitalized patients include 22 men, seven women, and three infants.
Among those critically injured is Jaclyn Azulet Alicia Matías Nieta, a two-year-old girl who was transferred on Monday, with support from the Michou and Mau Foundation, to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas. Her condition is currently listed as “stable but critical.”
