mets Option Pitcher Kodai Senga to triple-A Syracuse
The New York Mets announced Friday they have optioned right-handed pitcher Kodai Senga to Triple-A Syracuse. The move comes as Senga has struggled recently, posting a 6.56 ERA over his last eight starts and failing to complete six innings in any outing since June 6.
Senga’s demotion reflects a concerning downturn for the Japanese import, who signed a five-year, $75 million contract with the Mets prior to the 2023 season. The institution hopes a stint in the minors will allow Senga to address mechanical issues and regain the form that made him a promising addition to the rotation.Mets manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged the situation last weekend, stating, ”I’m pretty sure we’re going to have some discussions about what’s next for him. Our job is to get him right. But it’s been a struggle.” Senga also missed over a month of the current season due to a strained right hamstring.
In corresponding moves, the Mets activated catcher Francisco Alvarez from the injured list and added right-handed reliever Wander Suero, who was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Alvarez returns after being sidelined with an ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his right thumb, an injury further complicated by a subsequent fracture in the pinkie finger of his left hand sustained while playing for Syracuse. While the UCL sprain will ultimately require surgery, the Mets are aiming to postpone the procedure until after the season. Catcher Hayden Senger was also optioned to Triple-A Syracuse alongside Senga.
