Meta joins Safaricom to fix Kenya’s internet fragility with new subsea cable

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

meta and Safaricom have⁢ partnered to construct a new subsea cable ⁢landing ⁣in Mombasa, Kenya, aiming to considerably improve internet connectivity and resilience⁢ across East Africa. The project, announced September 2, 2025, seeks to address the region’s‍ vulnerability to internet disruptions caused by existing cable outages.

Currently, East⁤ Africa ⁣relies⁢ heavily on a‌ limited⁣ number ⁣of⁣ subsea cables, making the ⁣region susceptible to ⁤service interruptions when those cables ⁢are ⁣damaged.⁣ This new⁢ cable, a joint investment by Meta and Safaricom, will ⁢add ⁢crucial ⁤capacity and redundancy, ⁣lowering latency ‍and ‍increasing internet⁣ speeds for millions. The initiative is expected to bolster digital infrastructure,‍ supporting economic growth ⁣and innovation throughout ‍Kenya and⁣ neighboring countries.

Safaricom will oversee the construction and operation of ‍the cable, leveraging its existing infrastructure and expertise. Meta’s contribution will⁣ focus on providing technical ‍expertise and ensuring the ‍cable aligns‍ with⁢ global connectivity standards. The project underscores a growing trend of tech companies directly ⁤investing ‍in infrastructure ‍to improve internet ⁤access in emerging markets.
