Mercedes-Benz Leadership Shakeup: Technical Director and AMG Head Depart
Stuttgart, Germany – Mercedes-Benz is undergoing a significant leadership change, announcing the departure of both its technical director and the head of its high-performance AMG division. The moves, effective December 1, 2025, and currently unspecified for the AMG role, signal internal restructuring amid challenges in electric vehicle development and customer reception of recent performance models.
The exits of Michael Schiebe, technical director, and the unnamed AMG head come as Mercedes-Benz navigates delays in EV rollout, software issues, and quality control concerns that have led to vehicle recalls and reputational damage. Sources within the company suggest Schiebe faced criticism for these setbacks, and also a controversial consideration to discontinue BMW engine sourcing.Jörg burzer, currently responsible for production, quality, and supply chain management, will assume Schiebe’s responsibilities.
analysts point to customer dissatisfaction with AMG’s experimentation with high-performance four-cylinder engines as a key factor in the division head’s departure. The models were reportedly not well-received by buyers. Additionally, the company has decided to discontinue the Mercedes-EQE and EQE SUV models without planned successors.
The changes reflect a broader effort by Mercedes-Benz to streamline operations and address ongoing issues as it accelerates its transition to electric mobility and maintains its position in the luxury performance market. A replacement for the AMG division head has not yet been announced.
