Daniil Medvedev and Coach Gilles Cervara End eight-Year Partnership
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – September 1, 2025 – Daniil Medvedev and his coach of eight years, Gilles Cervara, have announced the end of their highly accomplished partnership, effective promptly following Medvedev’s disappointing run at the 2025 US open. The split marks the end of an era that saw Medvedev rise to world number 1 and claim a Grand slam title.
The decision comes after a challenging season for the 29-year-old Medvedev, culminating in a first-round defeat at flushing Meadows - leaving him with only one Grand Slam match win in 2025, achieved at the Australian open in January. The announcement follows a highly publicized on-court meltdown during the US Open, which resulted in a $42,500 fine for Medvedev.
Their collaboration began in 2017 and quickly yielded significant results. Under cervara’s guidance,Medvedev reached the top of the ATP rankings in 2022,secured the U.S. Open title in 2021, and won the ATP Finals in 2020. Cervara was recognized as the ATP Coach of the Year in 2019, the year Medvedev earned his first two of six ATP Masters 1000 trophies.
“Thank you Gilles ❤️,” Medvedev wrote on Instagram, announcing the split. “Amazing 8-10 years together, 20 titles, world number 1, but most importantly a lot of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever. I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future.”
Cervara echoed the sentiment in his own Instagram post: “Daniil, Our fantastic eight-season adventure together comes to an end. Like a symbolic wink of life, it’s after this US Open tournament that we end our collaboration. I am grateful and happy for all the great things and wonderful experiences we were able to experience together on the court during these eight years. It will remain etched in my memory forever. I thank you for placing your trust in me.I gave EVERYTHING, every second, for our shared goals. I loved training you, coaching you, supporting you (even when it was tough), and finding solutions with you and the team to help you perform. I will keep in mind your unconventional magic as a player, which is your strength. It will return, I’m sure.”
Medvedev currently holds a 26-18 record for the 2025 season. The future direction of both Medvedev’s coaching staff and his competitive career remains to be seen.
