Matthew Morgan Joins Cardiff Rugby and University, Club Reports
Matthew Morgan Returns to Cardiff Rugby in Academy and University Role
Matthew Morgan has returned to Cardiff Rugby in a dual role spanning the club’s academy and Cardiff University, Cardiff Rugby reported on October 21, 2026. The appointment follows a competitive recruitment process and marks one of the first formal initiatives stemming from a partnership between the two institutions announced earlier that month.
Morgan retired from professional rugby in 2023 after accumulating more than 200 senior appearances for Cardiff, the Ospreys, and the Bristol Bears, including 122 outings for the Blue & Blacks. Since hanging up his boots, the former Wales international has pursued coaching roles, currently serving as an assistant coach at Bridgend Ravens and working within Cardiff & Vale College. He will continue his duties with Bridgend alongside his new position.
Academy Responsibilities and University Coaching
In his new capacity, Morgan will work with the junior academy alongside Saul Nelson and Josh Turnbull. He is also tasked with offering specialist support to specific players following development plans across schools and colleges, while contributing to wider pathway projects including Cardiff Rugby’s Under-18 and Under-16 squads. On the university side, he assumes responsibility for team operations and backs attack.

Cardiff Rugby academy manager Gruff Rees described the appointment as a unique opportunity that connects the professional club and the university on a week-to-week basis. Rees noted that previous collaborations with universities were more informal, relying on student placements and ad-hoc signposting. According to Rees, the formal partnership creates more substance and strategic value by using a Russell Group university located directly on the club's doorstep.
Morgan Joins BUCS Super Rugby Campaign Against Nottingham
Morgan has already begun working with the Cardiff academy and is linking up with the Cardiff University Rugby Club. The former full-back steps straight into action to support Cardiff’s BUCS Super Rugby campaign, which features an upcoming fixture against Nottingham on October 28, 2026.
Reflecting on his career influences, Morgan pointed to Matt Sherratt as the biggest one after working with him for 10 years. Morgan stated that building trust and relationships remains central to getting the best out of young players moving through the pathway.

Chris Davies, Cardiff University head of rugby, emphasized that the partnership improves university recruitment by offering a clear pathway for prospective students. Davies added that bringing in a coach with Morgan’s credibility and playing experience provides unmatched knowledge to the student athletes.
