Ollie Purcell Joins Hawthorn as International Water Polo Star
A New Chapter for the Purcell Legacy
Ollie Purcell has signed with the Hawthorn Football Club, marking a transition for the 21-year-old from elite water polo to the AFL. The 195cm key defender, a former Australian water polo representative, brings a pedigree rooted in Yarrawonga sporting history, continuing a legacy established by his grandfather, Jim Purcell.
Elite Pedigree Meets AFL Ambition
Hawthorn national recruiting and list manager Mark McKenzie identified the signing as an exciting prospect for the club.

“We welcome Ollie to the Hawks; he joins our list as a talented international athlete with previous footy experience,” McKenzie said. “Having represented Australia in water polo across several international tours, Ollie is no stranger to an elite sporting environment.”
Honoring a Regional Sporting History
Purcell’s arrival at Hawthorn follows a storied family history in regional sport. His grandfather, Jim Purcell, was a life member of the Yarrawonga Football Netball Club and a formidable figure in athletics. Jim Purcell’s resume includes four premierships with the Burramine Football Club—serving as coach for the final two—and the 1959 league best and fairest award. He also proved his versatility as a professional runner, winning the 1955 Wangaratta Gift.

Building a Modern Key Defender
Hawthorn scouts were drawn to Purcell’s intercept marking and natural competitiveness. However, the club is taking a measured approach to his development. McKenzie confirmed that Purcell will be integrated alongside experienced defenders to aid his progression as he adapts to the specific demands of the AFL.
Managing the Physiological Shift
The jump from the water to the football field carries significant physical requirements.
