Mark Tangney Races to Rescue Campers in New Zealand Landslide at Mount Maunganui

Mark Tangney was traveling to Mount Maunganui for a hike when ⁣a landslide ⁢struck a campsite, prompting him to immediately assist​ those trapped. He recounted his experience to the New⁢ Zealand Herald, detailing‌ the⁣ chaotic scene and desperate rescue efforts.

Tangney stated⁢ he​ heard cries ⁤for help and rushed ‍toward a toilet​ block where individuals where pinned⁣ inside. “I was one of the first there. There were⁢ six or eight other guys there‍ on the roof of the toilet block wiht tools⁣ just trying to take the roof off because we coudl here people screaming ‘help us, help us, ⁣get us ⁢out‍ of here’,” he said.

The landslide occurred on January​ 29, 2026, at the popular holiday spot,⁢ resulting in significant disruption and a large-scale rescue operation.
