Mark Ruffalo Denies Antisemitism Accusations in Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Dispute

August 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Actor Mark Ruffalo hit back against accusations from Paramount that his criticism of the Ellison family’s proposed $111 billion Warner Bros. Discovery merger invoked antisemitic tropes, calling the claims “appalling and fundamentally dishonest” in a statement given to Fox News Digital.

The Corporate Dispute Over the Oracle Tech and the Ellison Merger

The fiery exchange roots itself in an ongoing corporate showdown surrounding a massive media consolidation deal. Ruffalo took to social media to repost video remarks featuring Paramount board member Safra Catz. In the clip, Catz appeared to tout what she termed “really profoundly scary technologies” utilized by Oracle—the firm co-founded by Larry Ellison—to assist the Israeli military following the October 7, 2023, terror attacks by Hamas.

Commenting on the footage, Ruffalo wrote that Larry Ellison was using Oracle to fund his son David’s Warner Bros. acquisition. The Marvel actor warned that those surveillance technologies could eventually be folded into one of the largest media conglomerates on earth. According to Variety, a Paramount spokesperson swiftly condemned the remarks, stating that the company felt troubled when antisemitic tropes surfaced within the framing of a business dispute.

The corporate statement argued that applying words like “genocide” and “apartheid” to an impending corporate transaction goes too far and cheapens actual human suffering. The studio added that it does not tolerate prejudice of any kind against anyone.

Ruffalo Defends His Activism and Scrutinizes Foreign Money

Responding directly to the studio’s pushback, Ruffalo defended his political convictions and separated his critique of state actions and military tech contracts from hostility toward Jewish people. He emphasized that his life, acting career, and activism have been deeply shaped by Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones whom he considers family.

Shifting focus back to the mechanics of the proposed media merger, Ruffalo argued that scrutinizing the Ellisons, Oracle’s government contracts, and the potential threat to editorial freedom is fair game. The $111 billion transaction would hand a single family control over CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros. Furthermore, Ruffalo pointed to foreign money backing the deal whose influence on future editorial decisions remains opaque to the public.

Lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle have called for national security reviews regarding the arrangement.

Regulatory Roadblocks and the 2027 Timeline

The high-stakes corporate maneuver faces fierce legal headwinds outside of public PR battles. A coalition of 12 state attorneys general is actively challenging the proposed combination. To stave off immediate injunctions, the involved companies have agreed not to close the multi-billion-dollar deal until June 1, 2027, or until a court issues a ruling on the states’ claims, whichever comes first.
