Malcolm-Jamal Warner: A Look Back at His Career

Born in New Jersey on August 18, 1970, Malcolm-Jamal Warner displayed an early aptitude for the performing arts. He honed his skills at the Professional Children’s School in New York and was notably selected by Bill Cosby to portray his son in the iconic sitcom The Cosby Show.

Through his role in The Cosby Show, Warner achieved international recognition and earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His television career continued with prominent roles in series such as Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and The Resident. He also made appearances in acclaimed shows including Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, Suits, American Crime Story, 9-1-1, and The Rap Game.

beyond his acting work, Warner also established himself as a director, helming music videos and television episodes.In 1992,he directed the educational special Time Out: The Truth About HIV,AIDS,and You,which focused on HIV prevention. His film credits include roles in Drop Zone (1994),The List (2006),and shot (2017).

In the music realm, Warner won a Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration as a featured artist on the song Jesus Children, alongside Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway. He received a further nomination in 2022 for his spoken word poetry album,Hiding in Plain View.

Most recently, Warner co-hosted the podcast Not All Hood with Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley. The podcast explored themes of African-American masculinity, mental health, and media portrayal.
