Major Casualties After Mudslide Hits China-Nepal Border

The disaster unfolded as a torrent of mud and debris burst from the banks of a river in the Himalayan border region. Chinese state media reported major casualties from the mudslide on the Tibetan side of the frontier, prompting Chinese President Xi Jinping to order an all-out rescue effort. At the same time, the Nepal Tourism Board confirmed that 384 people were unaccounted for across the region following the flash flood.
Missing Nationals and Cross-Border Rescue Operations
International tour operators and local authorities scrambled to account for travelers caught in the high-altitude zone. According to Alpine Eco Trek manager Ram Kumar Adhikari, two Irish nationals, 12 UK citizens, four South African nationals, and four Nepalese tour guides working for the firm are among the missing. Travel logs shared with the PA news agency indicate the missing British tourists range in age from 13 to 65.
The Nepal Tourism Board stated that its staff and tourist police are working to verify the safety status of visitors in the area. A preliminary check found that 291 foreign nationals had been reported missing, with more than 100 individuals still awaiting nationality confirmation. Americans, Indians, an Australian, and Malaysians are among the diverse group of unaccounted-for travelers, according to the tourism board.
In response to the crisis, the Nepal Army deployed helicopters and disaster response personnel to the affected zones. Eyewitness accounts underscore the suddenness of the event. Raju Bhadel, a 56-year-old resident, told reporters that his relatives reported their entire house being swept away.
Hydropower Damage and Regional Infrastructure Impacts
The disaster severely crippled local power generation and transport routes. The Nepal Electricity Authority reported that approximately 430 megawatts of production capacity—spanning both hydropower and solar facilities—has sustained direct damage. The authority stated that production, transmission, and distribution assets were hit hard, triggering electricity supply disruptions across the region.

Police in Nepal issued urgent safety alerts via social media, urging residents in riverside areas along the Trishuli River—including districts such as Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, and Gorkha—to relocate to higher ground immediately. Images shared by law enforcement agencies showed muddy floodwaters surging through settlements, leaving buildings partially submerged in thick silt.
Scientific analysts have begun evaluating the root physical cause of the catastrophe. Sarthak Shrestha, a remote sensing and geo-information analyst at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), noted that preliminary assessments showed no anomalies originating directly from the Chinese side of the border. Analysts currently suspect a rock-ice avalanche occurred on the Nepalese side, blocking the Lhende River and triggering a massive cascading flood.
