Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Hits Indonesia: 47 Dead, Hundreds Displaced

August 15, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Flores Rocked by 7.7-Magnitude Quake

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Flores region at 5:58 a.m. local time on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) placed the epicenter 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Rising Toll and Widespread Destruction

National Disaster Management Agency head Suharyanto confirmed 47 deaths, with the highest concentration of fatalities in the Sikka, Manggarai, and East Manggarai regencies. Hospitals are currently treating at least 50 injured survivors. On the ground, the destruction is severe: more than 150 houses were flattened, and nearly 200 others sustained significant damage.

Public infrastructure has been decimated, with over 100 schools, churches, and medical centers destroyed. Fathur Rahman, head of the Search and Rescue Office in Maumere, warned that the death toll is expected to rise as landslides continue to bury or isolate remote villages across six regencies. Rescue efforts are currently hindered by a lack of heavy equipment and severe damage to local infrastructure.

Tsunami Strikes and Logistical Standoffs

While national authorities lifted a broader tsunami warning after determining there was no large-scale sea-level threat, localized tsunamis did occur. A 1.61-meter wave slammed into the coastal village of Riung in Ngada regency, leaving the area blanketed in mud and debris. Smaller surges—0.94 meters in Maurole and lesser waves in Bulukumba and Sape—were also recorded.

Communication networks remain largely dark due to regional power outages, according to East Nusa Tenggara Police Chief Rudi Darmoko. The Trans-Flores highway, a 700-kilometer mountain road serving as the island’s primary artery, is blocked by landslides. To manage the crisis, the government has deployed three helicopters and a rescue vessel to support the estimated 2,000 villagers now residing in temporary shelters.

A Day of Dual Seismic Shocks

The disaster was compounded by a second tremor on Saturday afternoon. The USGS reported a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in North Sumatra province. Because the quake struck at a depth of 172.5 kilometers, Indonesian officials reported no significant casualties or structural damage from the event.

Meanwhile, the Flores region remains unstable. Authorities have tracked at least 235 aftershocks, the largest of which reached a magnitude of 6.2. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with teams struggling to navigate the hazardous combination of seismic activity and landslide-blocked terrain to reach isolated survivors.
