Hitachi Rail to Upgrade Fare Collection System for Jakarta MRT

August 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Hitachi Rail has secured a contract to modernize the fare collection system for the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network in Indonesia. The agreement tasks the company with upgrading the existing ticketing infrastructure and integrating new digital payment technologies to improve passenger throughput and system efficiency across the transit line.

## Scope of the Jakarta MRT Modernization
The project focuses on replacing and updating the automated fare collection (AFC) hardware and software currently in use on the Jakarta MRT. According to information released by Hitachi Rail, the upgrade is designed to support a broader range of payment methods, including contactless bank cards and mobile-based digital wallets.

The modernization aims to address bottlenecks at station entry and exit points. By installing updated gate technology and backend processing systems, the transit authority intends to reduce transaction times for commuters. Hitachi Rail stated that the project will also involve the implementation of a centralized system to manage fare data and real-time passenger analytics, allowing the operator to better monitor ridership patterns.

## Digital Integration and Transit Infrastructure
The shift toward a more versatile payment ecosystem aligns with Indonesia’s national push for digital financial inclusion. The new system is intended to be interoperable with other public transportation modes in the Jakarta metropolitan area, facilitating seamless transfers for daily commuters.

Hitachi Rail’s involvement in the Jakarta MRT follows its ongoing presence in the regional rail sector. The company has previously supplied signaling and power systems for various projects in the Asia-Pacific market. For this specific contract, the firm will oversee the design, installation, and testing phases of the new ticketing equipment.

## Implementation Timeline
The transit authority and the contractor have initiated the preparatory phase for the system rollout. While the specific schedule for the phased deployment across individual stations remains subject to operational planning, the hardware installation is expected to proceed while maintaining regular service levels on the line.

Project officials have not yet announced the final date for the full system integration, and the transition process remains under the supervision of the local transit management team.
