Magda Szubanski Tackles Lego Amidst Cancer Treatment
Australian comedy icon Magda Szubanski is finding ways to stay occupied during her battle with stage 4 Mantle Cell Lymphoma, recently sharing her experience building a Lego land Rover Defender. Despite the challenges posed by “chemo induced numbness in fingertips,” Szubanski has prepared for the task by ordering a building kit that includes pliers and finger protectors. She humorously noted her intention to add a Lego Queen elizabeth II to the vehicle’s driver’s seat.
Szubanski revealed her diagnosis in late May to her Instagram followers, describing the rare and aggressive blood cancer as “rough” but expressing hope. She emphasized the strong support system she has, including friends, family, and a dedicated medical team. Szubanski confirmed she is undergoing one of the best available treatments and receiving world-class care in Melbourne. She has asked for understanding from her supporters, requesting they maintain a safe distance to protect her compromised immune system during treatment.
The cancer was incidentally discovered during a breast screening that revealed enlarged lymph nodes. Szubanski admitted to feeling unwell for some time prior, prompting her to request additional blood tests which led to the diagnosis. While she is in good hands and spirits, she humorously reserves her “human right to be a cranky old moll.”
