The Community of Madrid has allocated €8 million to expand dental care access for vulnerable populations, benefiting 9,000 individuals since mid-last year, according to a statement released Wednesday.
The funding, earmarked for treatments beginning in the latter half of 2025, will cover complex dental procedures for those under 16, including prosthetics, as well as addressing cavities and providing oral hygiene services for residents over the age of 80. The initiative is being carried out through agreements between the Regional Health Department and the Official College of Dentists and Stomatologists of the First Region (COEM).
Residents seeking these services are directed to first consult with a dentist at their local health center, who will then refer them to participating clinics, the Community of Madrid stated. The COEM reported earlier this month that a suspected imposter was detained in Leganés for performing hyaluronic acid lip injections without proper authorization, highlighting the importance of accessing dental care through official channels.
Beyond these targeted programs, the public health system in Madrid offers specific dental coverage for pregnant women, including check-ups, dietary advice, fluoride applications, and oral cleanings as needed. Children between the ages of two and four are also eligible for initial dental evaluations to assess their risk of developing cavities, with preventative treatments like fluoride application and sealants available. A renewed agreement between the COEM and the Madrileño Health Service ensures continued dental assistance for children aged 6 to 16, encompassing regular check-ups, fluoride treatments, sealant applications, cleanings, and fillings for permanent teeth.
The Regional Health Department is currently promoting its primary care dental services through a campaign titled “Close to You: Primary Care,” featuring informational posters and a video available on the Madrid Health channel on YouTube, which is also displayed in health centers throughout the region.
