Madagascar’s badminton team returned from Gaborone, Botswana, earlier this month following a challenging appearance at the African Badminton Championships, Senior category, held February 9th to 12th. The Malagasy team competed in the men’s division, grouped with Algeria and Zambia, but failed to advance beyond the group stage.
In the opening match against Algeria, the Malagasy team suffered a 5-0 defeat. Lalaina lost to Adel Hamek in straight sets, 21/18 and 21/18. Tokinirina also fell to Mohamed Belarbi (21/10, 21/13), and Andriambola was defeated by Mohamed Ouchefoun (21/14, 21/13). The doubles pairing of Lalaina and Tokinirina lost to Mammeri and Sabri Medel in two sets, 21/13 and 21/12. Hery-Zo and Andriambola also lost their doubles match against Oussama Kedou and Mohamed Ouchefoun (21/10, 21/7).
The team’s fortunes did not improve in their subsequent matches against Zambia, again losing 5-0. Kalombo Mulenga defeated Lalaina (21/10, 21/12), while Chongo Mulenga overcame Tokinirina (21/13, 21/12). Hery-Zo was unable to secure a win against Rodrick Mwansa (21/11, 21/6). The pairings of Lalaina and Toky, and Hery-Zo and Andriambola, both lost their doubles matches.
According to reports, the Malagasy players self-funded their participation in the tournament.
Botswana recently named its squad for upcoming World Cup tests against Algeria and Mozambique, according to Africa Top Sports, signaling continued activity in African badminton competitions. The team includes a recall of a veteran midfielder, further demonstrating the ongoing preparation for international events.
