Psychosis, a condition characterized by a loss of contact with reality, can manifest as paranoia, auditory hallucinations, visual disturbances, and impaired cognitive function.
The growth of psychosis is understood to stem from a complex interplay of genetic predispositions and adverse environmental influences. Certain groups face an elevated risk of developing psychotic disorders:
- Individuals with a family history of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder in first or second-degree relatives.
- People diagnosed with specific genetic conditions, such as 22q11 syndrome or Klinefelter syndrome (XXY).
- Individuals exposed to multiple environmental risk factors, including birth complications, severe childhood trauma, significant use of certain substances,or upbringing in densely populated urban environments.
