Limpopo Father Sentenced to Life for Raping 12-Year-Old Daughter
A 42-year-old man from Sehlakwane village in Zaaiplaas, Limpopo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment at the Groblersdal Regional Court for repeatedly raping his 12-year-old daughter, iol.co.za reported. The assaults occurred across 2022 while the victim’s mother was away from home. The accused’s identity has been withheld by authorities to protect the child and prevent further victimization.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi stated during the trial that the victim became pregnant as a result of the abuse and gave birth to a baby girl in 2023. Court proceedings revealed that the father threatened to kill both the child and her mother if she exposed the assaults. He also instructed her to blame a boy from a local homestead for the pregnancy.
Flight and Discovery of Abuse
The abuse came to light after the father told his daughter not to lock her bedroom door one evening, warning her that he would visit during the night. Fearing for her safety, the girl fled and stayed away from home for a week.
Her family reported her missing to the police. While away, she messaged her aunt to disclose the sexual abuse, and the aunt immediately notified the child’s mother. Upon her return, the family reported the matter to law enforcement, prompting the father’s arrest. The State successfully opposed his bail application, and the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecution Outlines Trauma and Violation of Trust
During sentencing proceedings, State Prosecutor Sifiso Miya submitted a pre-sentence report alongside a victim impact statement compiled by a social worker. The documentation outlined the severe psychological and emotional trauma inflicted on the child and her family.
The prosecution argued that the defendant violated his position of trust, parental authority, and the victim’s rights to dignity, privacy, and bodily integrity. The State maintained that the gravity of the crime outweighed his personal circumstances and that no substantial or compelling factors justified a sentence below the prescribed minimum of life imprisonment.
In addition to the life sentence, the Groblersdal Regional Court declared the man unfit to possess a firearm. The court ordered his name entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and prohibited him from working with children.
Limpopo Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Ivy Thenga welcomed the outcome. The sentence delivers a clear message that the justice system will not tolerate individuals who sexually abuse and violate vulnerable children, particularly within the home where they ought to feel safest, Thenga stated.
