Liga MX clears Club América of foreign player rule violations
Liga MX officially closed the eligibility case surrounding Club América’s foreign player usage and the roster designations of midfielder Ícaro da Conceição during the Apertura 2026 tournament, TV Azteca reported.
The controversy ignited following a 2-2 draw between Diablos Rojos and the Águilas at Estadio Banorte. Following the match, Toluca head coach Antonio Mohamed complained that the Coapa club utilized 10 foreign players throughout the Apertura 2026 season. League regulations strictly cap first-team foreign registrations at nine.
According to an official statement released by Liga MX, the governing body cleared the club of any rule violations. The league explained that Ícaro da Conceição began the tournament registered with the first team wearing the number 27. On September 10, 2026, Club América officially requested his transfer to the Sub-21 category within the regulation window, fulfilling Article 24.3 of Appendix I of the Sub-21 Competition Regulations, as noted by TV Azteca.
The Roster Mechanics Behind the Dual Dorsals
The player’s shifting roster status created distinct documentation challenges and public confusion regarding his jersey numbers. Mediotiempo reported that the competition rules state players cannot use two distinct jersey numbers while playing for the same squad. However, the regulatory framework requires Sub-21 registrants to use numbers ranging from 181 to 230.

ESPN Deportes detailed that the administrative adjustments forced a shift from his initial number 27 to the number 217. The league confirmed that this modification complied with Article 53 of the Sub-21 Competition Regulations and Article 60 of the general league rules. La Jornada noted that the league authorized the change to grant the player a Carnet Único within the required timeframe.
Récord added context from an internal league source explaining that the alternative to approving the roster adjustment would have left the player inactive for six months. The league exercised its administrative authority to prevent forced inactivity while keeping the club compliant with foreign player caps.

Club América Adjusts Foreign Player List for New Defenders
To accommodate incoming South American central defenders Santiago Bueno and Santiago Ramos Mingo, Club América adjusted their foreign player availability. Mediotiempo and TV Azteca confirmed that both Ícaro da Conceição and José Zúñiga were removed from the initial first-team registration list. Concurrently, Sebastián Cáceres departed the club to join a team in Spain’s La Liga.
These concurrent transactions allowed the club to manage their foreign quota parameters while utilizing the single-card system to maintain roster flexibility. The official league stance removes the threat of any formal protests or points challenges from opposing clubs who faced América during the current tournament stretch.
