Lidl to Invest €420m in Munster Creating Over 500 Jobs
Lidl Ireland will invest €306 million in County Cork as part of a wider €420 million Munster capital program, creating 250 permanent jobs in the county and more than 500 across the province.
Lidl Plans New Distribution Centre and Store Expansion
The centerpiece of the regional investment is a new €200 million regional distribution centre located in Wallingstown, Little Island. The facility will mark Lidl’s fourth distribution hub in the Republic of Ireland, following existing sites in Charleville, Mullingar, and Newbridge, and is scheduled to come on stream by 2030. Alongside the distribution centre, the retailer plans to open 14 new stores and redevelop 10 existing locations across Munster. These 25 construction developments will support more than 4,500 construction workers.
The broader regional expansion will increase Lidl’s permanent workforce in Munster from 1,300 to more than 1,800 employees. The €420 million Munster program forms a significant component of Lidl’s wider €600 million, five-year investment plan across the Republic of Ireland, which entails opening up to 35 additional stores nationwide.

Economic Impact and Supplier Networks
Operating a network of more than 192 stores and employing over 6,300 people nationally, the retailer currently maintains extensive commercial ties with regional producers. Lidl procured €136 million worth of goods last year from 120 suppliers in County Cork alone, including firms such as Keohane Seafoods, Castlecor Potatoes, and Irish Yogurts.
Speaking at the launch event at Blackrock Observatory, Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed the capital deployment. Businesses like Lidl play an important role in the national economy by creating jobs and supporting local suppliers, the Taoiseach stated. Robert Ryan, chief executive of Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland, described the expenditure as a statement of long-term confidence in the region, adding that the company’s contribution extends well beyond physical infrastructure. Tara O’Connor, regional managing director, noted that the Little Island development and store upgrades will build the operational teams required to support the company’s growth in the county for years to come.
