LG is expanding its automotive content platform to include Xbox Cloud Gaming, bringing a full library of games directly to car infotainment systems. The announcement, made at CES 2024, builds on LGS existing partnerships with Hyundai motor Group adn Mercedes-Benz to transform vehicle downtime into entertainment opportunities. However, the increasing connectivity of cars also means a rise in mobile office capabilities, including video conferencing – a prospect not everyone welcomes.
This integration arrives as the automotive industry rapidly evolves into an extension of the entertainment space, especially with the growth of electric vehicles and longer charging times. Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, and potentially other automakers utilizing LG’s webOS platform will be the first to offer Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing passengers to play titles while parked. Together, the ability to seamlessly join Zoom calls and other work applications is becoming increasingly common, blurring the lines between commute and workday.
Currently, LG’s webOS-based automotive Content Platform already provides access to streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube within select Hyundai Motor Group vehicles.Mercedes-Benz has also showcased in-car gaming with its recently-launched CLA, featuring a hyperscreen and Dolby Atmos sound system for experiences like Fortnite while parked.
The addition of Xbox Cloud Gaming further solidifies this trend, offering a more robust gaming experience. All in-car entertainment applications are designed for use when the vehicle is stationary, catering to owners charging EVs or waiting during other stops. Despite the convenience of staying connected, the prospect of taking work calls on the move remains a concern for some.
