Lebanon-Israel Conflict: Macron Backs Lebanon’s Security, Warns Against Sovereignty Violations
French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed Lebanon’s right to defend its territory, describing the country’s fight as “just” amid escalating cross-border attacks with Israel, according to statements released Tuesday.
Macron’s comments, made alongside Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdallah Bou Habib, represent a significant expression of support for Beirut as tensions continue to mount. He cautioned against any violation of Lebanese sovereignty, stating that no such infringement could be justified. The remarks come as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies, with over 1,000 people killed and 1.1 million displaced within Lebanon, according to reports.
The French President also warned against a potential Israeli ground offensive into Lebanon, a move that would dramatically escalate the conflict. “We must all work together to prevent a ground operation in Lebanon,” Macron stated, according to ynetnews.
France has increased its military aid to Lebanon in response to the escalating violence, even as simultaneously urging both Hezbollah and Israel to cease attacks. Reuters reported that the increased aid is intended to bolster Lebanon’s defenses and maintain stability in the region.
Hezbollah’s leader has indicated the group will continue fighting, despite international calls for de-escalation. This stance, coupled with the ongoing Israeli attacks, raises concerns about a wider regional conflict. Macron, alongside Bou Habib, also cautioned against any attempts at “occupation” of Lebanese territory, Arab News reported.
The situation remains volatile, with no immediate resolution in sight. Diplomatic efforts continue, but a cessation of hostilities has not been reached, and the potential for further escalation remains high.
