Lawrence Wong to make first visit to China as prime minister, meet with Li Qiang and Xi Jinping in Beijing

Singapore Prime Minister Heads to China for Diplomatic Talks

Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s Prime Minister, is set to visit China, marking a pivotal moment in the nations’ relationship. This trip, which begins June 22, will focus on strengthening ties and addressing key international concerns.

High-Level Meetings Planned

During his visit to Beijing from June 22 to 26, Lawrence Wong will meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping. This marks Wong‘s first official China visit as Prime Minister.

The discussions aim to commemorate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that this trip is a chance for leaders to examine both bilateral issues, alongside regional and global developments.

Schedule and Delegation Details

The Prime Minister will also meet with Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People’s Congress. In Tianjin, he will take part in the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of New Champions, also known as Summer Davos. He will participate in a dialogue session with WEF president Borge Brende.

Accompanying Wong will be a delegation that includes ministers like Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations. Jeffrey Siow, Acting Minister for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Finance, will also attend.

Leadership Transition

Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, will be Acting Prime Minister from June 22 to 25. K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs, will assume the role from June 26 to 27 while Wong is on leave.

The visit underscores the importance of the Singapore-China relationship and sets the stage for continued collaboration on various fronts.
