Nigerian States Pledge Support for Responsible Gambling Initiatives
The Lagos and Oyo State governments are uniting to bolster responsible gambling practices across Nigeria, focusing on regulatory frameworks and mental health support. This collaborative effort, spurred by growing concerns, seeks to mitigate the potential harms associated with gambling addiction and protect vulnerable individuals.
Symposium Spotlights Need for Safer Gambling
Support for Gamble Alert’s campaign emerged at the 2025 Responsible Gaming Symposium in Lagos. Representing the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tolu Ajomale, the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Health, lauded Gamble Alert’s proactive advocacy.

State Investments in Mental Health and Regulation
Dr. Abayomi disclosed significant investments in mental health services by Lagos State, including helplines and trained personnel within healthcare institutions. The state is also building a large-scale mental health facility.
Boladuro Olajide, the Chairman and Director General of the Oyo State Gaming and Lotteries Board, mentioned that his state has established regulatory frameworks since 2023. They are actively reaching out to underserved communities with awareness programs and campaigns.
Mr. Olajide warned Nigerian youths against relying on gambling as a primary income source, emphasizing the need for alternative opportunities. He stated that such practices “is not a path to wealth. We must steer young people away from addiction and toward meaningful opportunities.”
Gamble Alert’s Role in Shaping Policy
Fisayo Oke, the Chief Executive Officer and founder of Gamble Alert, explained that the symposium was designed to encourage discussions between various stakeholders. She stated that “Responsible gaming is not optional. It is critical to the survival of the sector.”
