LA28 Olympics to Kick Off with historic Women’s 100m Final
Los Angeles, CA - The LA28 Olympic Games will make history from the starting gun, with the women’s 100m final scheduled to be the first track and field event of the games. British sprinter Dina Asher-smith hailed the decision, stating, “it will be an honor for the women’s 100m to open the LA Games… celebrating the enduring legacy, strength and global power of women’s sprinting, exactly 100 years on from the first time women competed in Olympic track and field. I can’t wait to set the tone for what will be a thrilling and stunning Games.”
The move underscores a broader commitment to gender equity at the Games, with organizers announcing a record-breaking number of female Olympians will participate. Every team sport will feature an equal or greater number of women’s teams compared to men’s, and women will comprise 50.5% of the total athlete quota across the 36 sports and 51 disciplines. The first official day of competition will also feature the most women’s finals in Olympic history.
The athletics events will be held at the iconic LA Memorial coliseum. The Games’ schedule also reveals the women’s triathlon will be the first medal event, while the final event will be a swimming competition. Notably, swimming has been moved to the second week of the Games to allow it to take place at SoFi Stadium, the venue for the opening ceremony.
