The Woman Behind ChileS Beloved Cueca, ’La Consentida,’ Revealed
villarrica, Chile – The inspiration behind one of Chile’s most iconic songs, ‘La Consentida,’ has been identified as Alicia Rosselot, a former tourism queen who captured the heart of composer Jaime Atria. A recent spotlight on Rosselot, featured in the CNTV program do remix, has renewed interest in the story of the couple and the origins of the beloved cueca.
Rosselot and Atria met in 1946 when she was crowned queen of tourism of Chile. While staying at a hotel in Villarrica, she noticed Atria playing guitar with a friend on the terrace. “There we started talking and from there I did not take off anymore,” Rosselot recalled in the interview. “Jaime had a court, he was obviously a person who came to the shot because he had an engaging personality, he was nice, he played the guitar. That is, he was a gallant.” Their relationship blossomed, leading to marriage, and ultimately, the creation of ‘la Consentida.’
In 1961, Atria composed ‘La Consentida’ to compete in the folk category of the International Song Festival of Viña del Mar, where it won first place. Rosselot playfully suggested, “As far as I know, I was (the spoiled), but that it consists or that there are others spoiled out there, I do not know.” Family members have confirmed the song was dedicated to Rosselot, and also to their four daughters and another daughter from atria’s second marriage.
