Kyiv residents maintain routines and find hope amid Russian strikes

Kyiv residents maintain routines and find hope amid Russian strikes

October 18, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

As Russian attack drones and missiles strike Kyiv daily, Ukrainian citizens balance constant air raids with resilient daily routines, while local Christian groups offer spiritual hope and practical street outreach.

Daily Air Raids and Resilient Routines in Kyiv

Attacks on Ukraine’s capital have grown increasingly frequent. Ukrainian officials recorded more than 2,200 Russian attack drones launched nationwide in just one single week. Throughout the year, Kyiv has endured upwards of 6,000 missile and rocket strikes. Despite hundreds of casualties, city life persists. Malls remain open, the metro runs, and residents walk dogs or sit on park benches. Nate Vance, a cousin of Vice President J.D. Vance who fought for Ukraine for three years, described the atmosphere. “You can sense kind of a tension,” Vance said. “Even if you don’t speak to people, you can just sense it when you look at them. But I think what comes with that is that people, after a while, tend to get complacent because you just have to keep going about your life, right? You can’t constantly put your life on hold.”

The Looming Threat of Winter and Power Shortages

While air defense remains a constant preoccupation, residents view the approaching winter with deep anxiety. Russian targeting has eliminated roughly 70 percent of Ukraine’s prewar power-generation capacity. Last winter left thousands of Kyiv apartment buildings without heat while temperatures dropped to 20 below zero. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations regarding the escalating campaign against civilian infrastructure. “Since the beginning of this year, Russia has already used more than 2,100 missiles of different types against us, against Ukraine, our people, and our children,” Zelenskyy told the UN. “In eight months of this year, Russia used 63,000 attack drones of different types against Ukraine, our people… Would your country survive if, God forbid, you had to face something like this? Ukraine has.”

Faith-Based Outreach Amid Air Raid Sirens

Amid ongoing sirens and military alerts, local faith communities maintain active public ministries. Pastors from multiple denominations continue street outreach regardless of overhead drone activity. Pastor Andrew Dudko described the immediate emotional toll on the population. “Now here in Kyiv, many people have a lot of fear inside, and we bring these people hope through Jesus Christ,” Dudko said. “Because only belief, only faith in Jesus Christ, brings them real hope and real love… We feel freedom from fear, and we carry this boldness to our people here in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine.” Pastor Oksana Novachuk noted that her congregation has expanded despite the conflict, reporting supernatural provision and protection that helped her church grow threefold.

Families Evaluate Safety of Staying in Kyiv

The persistent danger prompts some families to relocate. One of Nate Vance’s former comrades moved his wife and two small children out of Kyiv to shield them from explosions. While mass departures are absent, families continually evaluate the safety and viability of staying. “I’m not saying there’s a mass exodus, but there are people who are genuinely considering whether this is tenable,” Vance said. “But then if you look around, you see people who are obviously deciding that it is, because they’re still here. They will not fold because of a lack of will. That’s for sure. But ultimately, regardless of will, there is a mathematical reality in the availability of resources.” Ukraine recently acquired a new batch of Patriot missiles alongside authorization from Washington to build its own, leaving residents waiting to see if these supplies will maintain essential heating through February.
