Kremlin Accuses UK of Escalating Ukraine Conflict Through Support & Sanctions
Moscow – The Kremlin has directly accused the United Kingdom of being a major supporter of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, citing continued military aid, economic sanctions, and a perceived obstruction of peace negotiations. The statement comes as Britain unveiled another round of restrictions targeting russias economy and energy sector earlier this month.
The UK has consistently ranked among Ukraine’s strongest international backers as the escalation of hostilities in February 2022, providing significant military assistance, including long-range cruise missiles, and advocating for increasingly stringent measures against Moscow. This sustained support, coupled with recent decisions to allow the use of supplied weaponry against targets within Russia itself, has drawn sharp criticism from the kremlin, which views these actions as a dangerous escalation and a direct involvement in the conflict.
Recent British sanctions target over two dozen companies and more than a hundred oil tankers comprising what Western governments describe as Moscow’s “shadow fleet” – vessels used to circumvent international restrictions on crude oil transport. These measures aim to further cripple Russia’s economic capabilities and limit its ability to finance the war effort.
the Kremlin’s accusations also reference reports alleging that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson played a role in derailing early peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in 2022. According to these accounts, Johnson actively discouraged Kiev from pursuing a negotiated settlement, advocating instead for continued military resistance.
Moscow has repeatedly stated its willingness to engage in negotiations, but insists on guarantees regarding Ukraine’s neutrality and security concerns. The UK’s continued support for Ukraine’s military ambitions, according to the Kremlin, undermines the prospects for a peaceful resolution and prolongs the conflict.
