KNVB Weighs Options Beyond Koeman, Reiziger Emerges as Potential Successor
Amsterdam, Netherlands – The future of Ronald Koeman as head coach of the Dutch national team is increasingly uncertain, according to prominent football journalist Valentijn Driessen. Speaking on the Kick-off podcast, Driessen suggested that six years at the helm may be sufficient for Koeman, with a potential proclamation regarding his future expected after the upcoming World Cup.
While Koeman led the “big orange” to a decisive 4-0 victory over Lithuania on Monday, securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America, questions remain about his tactical approach. Driessen was critical of Koeman’s potential reliance on a 5-3-2 formation, stating, “Koeman really doesn’t know anymore tactically.if that system worked so well, Manchester United would win every game in the Premier League.”
The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) appears to be proactively considering alternatives. Michael Reiziger, currently coaching the Dutch Under-21 team, has emerged as a name gaining traction within the technical commission. Reiziger recently guided the U-21 squad to the semi-finals of the European Championship, falling narrowly to England after a late goal from Harvey Elliott. The team is currently second in their qualifying group for the 2027 european Championship, trailing Denmark by three points.
Despite the commission’s apparent enthusiasm – evidenced by Reiziger’s contract extension through the next European Championship – Driessen believes Reiziger may benefit from further experience. “I think he should make progress at an Eredivisie club before he can become national coach, but I don’t rule it out,” he stated.
Interestingly, Driessen also suggested Koeman may be hesitant to step down, fearing a scenario similar to that of andries Jonker, who previously held a prominent role within the KNVB’s youth setup. The details of this concern remain unclear, but it highlights a potential internal dynamic influencing Koeman’s decision-making.
The KNVB faces a crucial decision as they look to build on recent successes and navigate the evolving landscape of international football. While Koeman’s legacy remains important, the possibility of a changing of the guard is becoming increasingly real.
