Nine Killed in Accidental Explosion at Kashmir Police Station
Nowgam, kashmir – A devastating explosion at a police station in Nowgam, in the India-administered province of Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of at least nine people and injured 32 others on Friday night. The blast occurred shortly before midnight as officers were preparing to conduct forensic examination of seized materials.
Regional director-General of Police Nalin Prabhat described the incident as “very unfortunate,” but refrained from detailing the circumstances of the detonation. “Any speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary,” Prabhat told media.
The materials, totaling approximately 6,000 pounds, were confiscated during an examination into a recent terror attack. Earlier this week, a car bomb in New Delhi killed eight people and was declared a terrorist act. Authorities believe the seized materials and the New Delhi bombing are linked to the Pakistan-based organization Jaish-e-Mohammed.
The materials and accompanying weapons were originally seized in Faridabad. A raid connected to the investigation led to the arrest of six individuals, including four medical doctors whose licenses were revoked on Friday.
The explosion caused meaningful damage to the police station and surrounding buildings.According to a police statement, body parts were discovered as far as 650 feet from the blast site, and multiple vehicles were destroyed, “engulfed in flames and reduced to charred husks.”
Regional Lt.Gov. Manoj Sinha has ordered a full investigation into the cause of the explosion.
