Justine Wilson, former wife of Elon Musk, spoke about the billionaire’s estrangement from their transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, in a four-hour documentary directed by Alex Gibney, according to sources.
Documentary Revelations on Family Dynamics
The Alex Gibney documentary covers the personal life and career of the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive. Justine Wilson married Elon Musk in 2000, and the couple divorced in 2008. They shared six children, including their firstborn, Nevada, who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at 10 weeks old in 2002.
In the film, Justine Wilson describes Vivian as a strong-willed child who openly opposed her father. According to sources, Justine recalled that out of five children at the time, Jenna, which is Vivian’s middle name, was the most outspoken.
Elon Musk Estranged from Daughter After Gender Change
Justine recounted a conversation from when Vivian was six years old, occurring before Vivian publicly identified as transgender. Elon Musk allegedly asked his daughter, “There are winners and losers in this world. Do you want to be a winner or a loser?” Justine stated that the implied message was that Vivian would be considered a loser if she failed to follow her father’s directives.
The relationship deteriorated further after Vivian filed legally for a name and gender change in 2022, dropping her father’s surname. Justine noted that public statements made by Musk—including writing on the platform X that he felt he had lost his daughter to a “woke mind virus”—caused pain for Vivian because they were broadcast globally rather than addressed privately. Justine added that Musk did not attempt to repair the relationship personally.
Comparison to Prior Loss and Health Insurance Decisions
Addressing Musk’s characterization of Vivian’s transition as equivalent to losing a child, Justine drew a contrast with their infant son Nevada’s death. She stated that she told Musk they had actually experienced the death of a child, whereas what was happening now was simply a child growing up, according to sources.
Justine stated that Elon Musk canceled Vivian's health insurance the day after she publicly revealed her transgender identity. Vivian, now 22 years old, works as a model and activist, and has publicly criticized artificial intelligence for lacking human emotion and creative elements in art.
