“It all evens out in one season”

For weeks there has been talk of a lack of luck in the game at SG Barockstadt. Good performances, too few goals and points, that’s how the competitive year 2023 can be summed up so far. Against Eintracht Trier on Saturday, SGB showed a poor performance for the first time this year – and was still rewarded with a point. Because happiness returned at just the right moment.

“Everything always balances out over the course of a season,” said Sedat Gören after his team’s happy 2-2 draw in Germany’s oldest city. Actually one of those many football phrases for which you would have to throw three euros into the phrase pig in a double pass. But there is also a piece of truth in it. Just last week, after the 0-1 defeat against second-placed FC Homburg, Gören had spoken of a lack of luck in the game that had to be worked back.

Trier misses the decision

Because there, just like in the games against Offenbach and Balingen, the SGB was the better team for long stretches with more chances to score, but they failed to reward themselves. On Saturday in Trier it was exactly the other way around. It was one of the baroque city’s weaker performances this season. “We hadn’t had a good day. After 10-15 minutes we weren’t as consistent and had a lot of bad passes in our game. Trier was much better in the duels,” Gören aptly summarized his team’s performance.

Eintracht from Trier, who last won a game in the regional league at the end of September and even went eight games in a row before the game against SGB, should have won the game. Teams like Offenbach, Homburg or Balingen would probably have done the same. But Trier currently has neither the class nor the self-confidence of these teams and failed to decide the game early with the 3:1. That kept the baroque city alive. “We tried to keep going. In my opinion, the sticking point was the 89th minute when Tobi Wolf thwarted a huge chance. After that we threw everything forward,” said the SGB coach.

“It was important that we didn’t lose”

And this time luck was on the side of the baroque city. Substitute Tobias Göbel made the last-minute equalizer with the last attack. After the course of the game, a very lucky point for the SGB. In hindsight, that should no longer interest anyone. “It was important that we didn’t lose,” says Gören. This time the performance wasn’t right, but luck was on the side of the baroque city. If the two come together again in the future, it shouldn’t be long before the first victory of 2023 can be celebrated. (fh) +++
