Country singer Jessie Murph is facing backlash for her song and music video “1965,” with some critics comparing her to Kanye West and criticizing the violent imagery in the video.
Murph, who gained popularity through TikTok and YouTube, released her debut studio album, “That Ain’t No Man That’s the Devil,” recently. Her song “1965” includes the lyric, “I think I’d give up a few rights/If you would just love me like it’s 1965.”
an insider told the Daily Mail that the country music scene has reacted negatively to the song and its accompanying video, with some drawing parallels between Murph’s controversial actions and those of Kanye West. “if she continues this and goes completely off the rails like kanye, then people should have more conversations about the person she is rather than the artist she is,” the insider stated.
Murph’s performance of “1965” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” also drew criticism online.Comments included comparisons to “SNL skits” and expressions of disbelief at the perceived quality of the performance.
In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Murph acknowledged the strong reactions her music elicits. “I’m glad that I make people have some sort of reaction. I’d rather them be like, ‘I hate you,’ or ‘I love you,’ rather than, ‘I feel indifferently,’ I guess,” she said. She also expressed her confusion over the intensity of the negative feedback, stating, “But still, I just find it f-ing weird… I don’t have any hate in my heart… That’s been something that I’ve been trying to figure out how to navigate and not react and get mad because it totally makes me be like, ‘F-k you, b-tch.'”
Murph’s career began with uploading vlogs and covers on social media platforms. her 2021 single “Always Been You” marked her breakthrough, preceding her debut album. She has since collaborated with artists such as Diplo,Maren Morris, and Teddy Swims.
